I am so relieved to find out that enough people cared to save what records have not been destroyed. The forme
ayors and City council should be ashamed at the loss of some of the records.
I can't thank you enough for your efforts.

Claire, what you likely used when you came to the Archives on Pleasant Street was the WPA Name Index which we now have online, but it is not searchable by typing into the general search box on this website. If you go to the Topics page of this website (http://baltimorecityhistory.net/research-at-the-baltimore-city-archives/topics/) there is a link in the middle of the paragraph to Surnames starting with A-L, and that link will take you to the index cards. All of our electronic records are accessible through the Guide to Government Records (http://guide.mdsa.net).

This is a very professional website. I am impressed. I do have a question but I realize there is a possibility you cannot answer it. Many years ago when the B.C. Archives was on Pleasant Street, I went there and searched for a William Albert in the Civil War era. I am sure I used some sort of index because I still have my handwritten notes with references to files. At the time, . I found references to him serving on a jury near the Mount Clare Station which is the neighborhood where he did live, enlisting in the Civil War, his wife asking for payment because he was in the war, etc. I put his name in the Search box and nothing came up. So obviously not everything is online or do you think I am just going about this "repeated" search in the wrong way? Claire Albert, Columbia MD .
